Definition   

People who feel they are under stress often report an increase in neck tightness. Some scientific studies have implicated stressful work environments in a three-fold increase in reports of neck and shoulder pain. Headaches are also associated with neck and shoulder pain and tension.
 

Considerations 

Two excellent ways to help reduce the negative effects of stress on your neck and shoulders is to use muscular relaxation techniques and deep breathing exercises. Both of these techniques help to decrease the stress response and reduce muscle tension.
 

Muscular relaxation

Muscular relaxation involves contracting and then relaxing muscles. It should not take more than 10 to 15 minutes to perform. Best is to focus on each muscle group separately. Depending on your individual situation, focus on the muscle group closely related to your existing muscle tension.
