Sweating

Alternative names/Definitions

Heavy perspiration

Definition

Sweating is heavy perspiration, sometimes occurring at night, or even when the room is not hot. It can be heavy enough to soak a person’s clothing.

Considerations

Sitting in the heat of the sun, working out at the gym, giving a presentation at work — all of these activities can make you sweat. It's both natural and healthy to sweat under these conditions. In fact, when you're exposed to heat, exercising strenuously or under extreme emotional stress, you may lose several quarts of fluid in perspiration. A pea-sized bead of sweat can cool nearly 1 liter (about 1 quart) of blood 1 degree Fahrenheit.

Common Causes

  • Menopause
  • Anxiety
  • Medications such as certain high blood pressure drugs, over-the-counter fever-reducers and antipsychotics
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Cancer and other diseases

Home Care

This depends on specific conditions. Ask your doctor if not sure.

Call your health care provider if

What to expect at your health care provider's office

Your doctor will perform a physical exam, and determine what is causing your perspiration.
